What is Neuropsychological Assessment and Intervention Services?

Neuropsychological assessment is an evidence-based approach to understanding how a brain injury or condition affects thinking, emotions, behaviour, and daily life. It examines areas such as attention, new learning (or the ability to take in information), memory, problem-solving, and emotional well-being, helping to identify both strengths and challenges.

These assessments are not limited to a single condition. They support individuals with a wide range of risk factors or causes of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), including traumatic brain injuries from vehicle accidents or falls, alcohol and/or other substance misuse, lack of oxygen to the brain (hypoxia) following overdose or cardiac events, stroke, and other neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and brain tumours. By understanding how these conditions affect daily life, neuropsychological assessments help develop strategies to address challenges and achieve personal goals.

Neuropsychological testing is used to diagnose conditions, plan rehabilitation, and guide families, carers, and support teams in providing the right assistance. Many individuals with acquired brain injuries also experience co-morbidities, such as neuropsychiatric conditions (including schizophrenia and other mental health conditions), substance use issues, or other medical conditions, all of which can further impact cognitive function, behaviour, and daily life.

By assessing these overlapping factors, neuropsychological testing provides a clearer understanding of a person’s needs, ensuring a holistic approach to support and intervention. Addressing both the primary condition and any co-existing challenges allows for more effective strategies to enhance independence, recovery, and overall quality of life.
